Giant Schnauzer
GIANT SCHNAUZER BREED NOTES
Week commencing 22 January 2018
Seeing the old year out, Jennifer Menary drew an entry of 35 at LKA, less 7 absent. Val Reeves’ Ouseview Floyd Mayweather at Valter took the DCC and BOB, with Steve and Yoli Kirkwood’s Draxpark Lots To Like winning RDCC. In bitches, RBCC and BP was Lesley Parker’s Draxpark Hotter Than Hot, whilst Gerri Staples’ Ferncliffe Pistols At Dawn For Ruffhaus won her third CC. Congratulations!
Over the water at the Amsterdam Winner Show, Ch Philoma Man After Midnight won the Reserve CACIB, whilst Cullen and Smith’s Philoma Tempo took the Bitch CACIB and BOB. Best Junior was Philoma Midnight Sun.
Seeing the new year in, at Boston Giants were represented in AVNSC, where Cullen and Thomas’ Ch Philoma Lana Lang took BOB under Irene Green and then Group 3 under Chris Quantrill. RBD was Philoma Midnight Sun, and RBB was Bakewell’s Foxwood’s Femme Nikita.
Manchester also saw Ch Philoma Lana Lang winning Group 3, this time under Ron James. Breed judging was undertaken by Elina Haapaniemi, who drew an entry of 23 less 5 absent, without CCs. RBB was Philoma Lyrica Lloyd. In dogs, BD was Jelena Semjonova’s Ir Ch Robmarralee Back In Black Jun Ch, and RBD Ch Philoma Man After Midnight. BP went to Philoma Midnight Sun, who was then shortlisted in the puppy group under Mr C Mackay.
The Giant Schnauzer breed specific seminar to be held on 5 May 2018 in Roade, Northants, is filling up fast. Anyone wanting to attend, whether to carry out the judging assessment or simply to attend the seminar and learn more about the breed, should register their interest with the GSC secretary, Michelle Humphries, who can be e-mailed on michellejh1@live.com.

GIANT SCHNAUZER BREED NOTES
Week commencing 3 December 2017
The Northern Schnauzer Club championship show drew an entry of 33 for Pippa Moore (Fillipers), less 6 absent. The Bitch CC and BOB was won by Fish’s Foxwood’s Destiny’s Child, who went on to impress Dominique Brixey for RBIS. The Dog CC was awarded to Rylance’s Foolshouse Capone at Foxwood, his third I believe. Congratulations to all! Reserves went to Semjonova’s Robmarralee Back In Black (Dog) and Staples’ Ferncliffe Pistols At Dawn for Ruffhaus (Bitch). Trafford’s P/S, Treuherz Georgia, then took Best Puppy at the tender age of 6 months.
The following weekend saw the Eurodogshow at Kortrijk in Belgium, where the judge, Edith Gallant, may have been surprised to see that such a large proportion of the black dogs entered (two thirds) emanated from the south of England. Best of Breed and the Bitch CACIB was awarded to Bill Malcolm’s Quimada Van De Riesenhorst, with the Dog CACIB going to Veal’s Ch Philoma Man After Midnight. Reserve Bitch CACIB went to Cullen & Smith’s Philoma Tempo, with the Reserve Dog CACIB being won by Van Der Linden’s Gloris TJ, who also happens to be the sire of the Best Puppy, Cox & Bowman’s Pushkadell Tuscan to Grovelea, and Best Baby Puppy, Driver & Marston’s Edelphie Delores Delago. In Pepper & Salts, Best of Breed was awarded to Merritt’s Silver Senator Kheiron.
The Schnauzer Club of Great Britain held its Christmassy open show on 26 November in Weedon. The 10 Giants present were judged by Ann Swallow. Best of Breed was Fish’s Foxwood’s Femme Fatale for Dulejoes, with RBOB going to Brown & Tunnicliffe’s Draxpark Hot Tip. I am told that Best Puppy was awarded to Driver & Marston’s Edelphie Delores Delago, although that is a slightly curious result to my mind because Hot Tip is still a puppy. Last but by no means least, Best Veteran was won by Cox & Bowman’s Ch Scapman’s Elle Negra to Grovelea.
Jennifer Menary is judging this weekend at LKA; the only general championship show which sees Working and Utility groups classified on the same day, and so an opportunity for pre-Christmas revelry amongst schnauzer folk! Have fun!

GIANT SCHNAUZER BREED NOTES
Week commencing 23 October 2017
Great atmosphere at the Giant Schnauzer Club championship show on 22 October, which was well attended by enthusiasts of the breed, whether showing dogs or not. It was good to see so many owners socialising puppies, and the ringside banners and new table runners gave the usual roomy and practical venue something of a lift.
Judging was Charlotte Orre (Chottans) from Sweden, who drew one of the highest entries of the year of 51, less 8 absent. In bitches, the CC winner (her first) was Donna Smith’s Philoma Tempo, who went on to win RBIS and BOS. The RBCC was awarded to Lesley Parker’s Ch Draxpark Hot Like Me; a good day for the Parkers, in that Draxpark Bedazzling Charm ultimately won BVIS. Best Puppy Bitch was Cullen and Thomas’ Philoma Lyrica Lloyd.
Lyrica Lloyd’s litter brother, Veal’s Philoma Midnight Sun, won the RDCC and BPIS. The dog CC winner, Smith’s Ch Boston Blackstone-N, handled by Karen Fish, was ultimately the judge’s favourite, taking Best In Show. Congratulations to all of the winners.
The GSC also presented its annual awards for the top winning Giants of the year between its October championship show. Top Giant was Kevin and Sandie Cullen and Rita Thomas’ Ch Philoma Lana Lang. Karen Fish’s Foxwood’s Femme Fatale For Dulejoes was 2017’s Top Giant Puppy. Well done to both!
The Schnauzer Club of Great Britain is holding an open show on 26 November in Weedon. Giants are to be judged by Ann Swallow. Schedules are available from the SCGB website and entries close on 6 November.

Week commencing 9 October 2017
South Wales Kennel Association saw 23 Giants (less 3 absent) entered for Dominique Brixey. Congratulations go to Dave Herbert’s Grovelea Hip Hop, who won his exciting first CC, handled by Lukasz, and then went on to take Best of Breed. RDCC and BP went to Clare Tyson’s Tyshunde Apprentice, handled by Kirk Moss, who later pleased Stephen Bardwell to take PG3.
In bitches, Jemma Foster’s Eskaidee Katinka was awarded the Bitch CC, and Karen and Janice Fish’s Foxwood’s Femme Fatale For Dulejoes won the RBCC. Well done to all.
I gather also that, in France, Sue Cox enjoyed success at Douai International Dog Show. A good weekend for Grovelea dogs all round.
Online entries for the Giant Schnauzer Club championship show close online on 16 October. The show will be held at Markfield on 22 October, and our judge is Charlotte Orre from Sweden. After the show, the awards for Top Giant and Top Puppy 2017 will of course be made. Anyone with an interest in the breed is warmly invited to come along.
The breed specific seminar planned for November has been postponed, but has already been rescheduled for Saturday, 5 May 2018 at Roade Village Hall in Northamptonshire. The format allows for anyone wishing to learn more about the breed to come along to the seminar in the morning, after which a lunch will be laid on. For aspiring judges, the seminar will be followed by a written paper and a hands on assessment in the afternoon.
Although it seems a long way away, for those who would be interested in attending, please stick the date in your calendars and let the club secretary, Michelle Humphries, know. She will then be able to send you a booking form when it is available. Her e-mail address is michellejh1@live.com.
Finally, the Northern Schnauzer Club is holding its championship show in Elsecar, near Barnsley, on 11 November 2017. Entries are still open, and again this event is often a draw for non-exhibitors who are interested in any of the three schnauzer breeds.

Week commencing 18 September 2017
At Richmond, there were again no CCs on offer, but 10 entered less 1 absent for our judge, Alan Mease. Best Dog was Veal’s Ch Philoma Man After Midnight, and Reserve Best Dog / Best Puppy Dog went to Philoma Midnight Sun. Best Bitch was Whitney’s Primavista’s Got The Look, and Reserve Best Bitch was Cullen and Thomas’ Ch Philoma Lana Lang. Best Puppy was the bitch, Cullen’s Philoma Lyrica Lloyd, who later pleased Sandra Marshall and was awarded Puppy Group 3.
Best of Breed was awarded to Ch Philoma Man After Midnight, although whether the judge was entitled to do so will I think be considered by the Kennel Club, in that he was beaten in a mixed sex open class by the RBB. It is understood that the judge believed that the award could be made, in that the BD had not met the BB until the challenge for BOB.
This raises a question over whether mixed sex classification at Championship Shows is particularly helpful. I understand that a reduced classification may be offered if the society wishes to offer an appointment to a judge who is not on a B list (or above) for the breed. However, in our breed, I would be surprised if a B list judge could not be found or, for those not yet on a club B list, if they could not apply to be appointed to it.
At Darlington, there were 21 entered less 6 absent for Tom Mather. The Dog CC was awarded to Ch Philoma Man After Midnight, and RDCC to Smith’s Ch Boston Blackstone-N. The Bitch CC and Best of Breed went to Ch Philoma Lana Lang, and RBCC to Parker’s Daserbe Chase The Ace To Draxpark. Best Puppy was the dog, Tyson’s Tyshunde Apprentice. Both he and the BOB winner were shortlisted in their respective groups.
On a different note, I understand that a Giant Schnauzer will feature in this Thursday’s episode of The Supervet, having travelled from Portugal with her owners to find a solution to a damaged knee joint. 8pm on Channel 4!

At City of Birmingham, there were again no CCs on offer, but 12 were entered less one absent for Bert Easdon. Best of Breed and Best Bitch was Cullen and Thomas’ Ch Philoma Lana Lang, with Cullen and Smith’s Philoma Tempo being awarded Reserve Best Bitch. Best Dog was Veal’s Ch Philoma Man After Midnight, with Reserve Best Dog going to Veal’s Philoma Midnight Sun. He then beat his litter sister, Philoma Lyrica Lloyd for Best Puppy, and went on to be shortlisted in the puppy group under Mike Gadsby.
Looking ahead, entries are open for the two club championship shows to take place before the end of the year. The Giant Schnauzer Club have invited an overseas judge, Charlotte Orre (Chottans) from Sweden to provide her opinion of the breed on 22 October 2017 at Markfield, and judging Giants at the Northern Schnauzer Club in Elsecar on 11 November 2017 is Pippa Moore. Online entries for both are at haveadogday.co.uk.
For chances to learn, the Giant Schnauzer Club is planning to hold a breed specific judging seminar on 4 November 2017 at Roade Village Hall in Northamptonshire. The itinerary starts with a presentation about the breed, including its history and breed standard, which people are welcome to attend even if they do not wish to sit the assessment. The presentation is then followed by a written paper and a hands on assessment for those who have the ambition to judge the breed. Places are limited, so please contact the club secretary, Michelle Humphries, to register.

For many, the Bank Holiday weekend was uncharacteristically hot. I hope that everyone enjoyed it and that your dogs stayed cool – my bunch were certainly throwing themselves into any body of water that they could find, even on our early morning walks!
At the Scottish Kennel Club, there were only three Giants entered (no CCs) for Mike Vines, and all bitches. Best Bitch and Best of Breed was Mike Whitney’s Primavista’s Got The Look, and RBB was Roe & Stewart’s Echodream Athena.
Good to see some Open Show societies trying something new. Pollard Canine Society is putting on a range of special classes for the two colours of Giant at its show in Barnsley on 24 September, and Beckenham Canine Society has classes for Giants for the first time at its show in Maidstone on 1 October, the latter kindly sponsored by the Schnauzer Club of Great Britain. Entries close on Fosse Data for both next week. I hope these initiatives draw interest from exhibitors and other enthusiasts for the breed alike.
Good news in health: the AHT have established from epilepsy samples supplied for the breed that the Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR1) mutation is not present. Whilst that only rules something out, rather than providing an answer, it is a step towards gaining a better understanding of epilepsy in Giant Schnauzers.
The update to the Giant Schnauzer Club handbook is nearing completion. Any photographs of champions / imports or advertisements for dogs or kennels should please be sent to me soonest.
