Welcome to the Bolognese breed notes on Dog Focus. A great new website serving dog people. I want this column to be not just about wins at shows but also about what you want to know about the breed and tackling problems such as coat management, health, training and exercising including diet. I would love to include fun dog shows that Bolognese are attending and hear from folk just wanting to tell me about the super dog that they have! I hope to be able to tackle the more need to know issues but equally the nice to know issues too!

Firstly this week was Bournemouth Championship Show and although we had a change of judge (Stephen Goodwin) exhibitors seemed to be pleased with his assessment. I was stewarding for Stephen the week before and he told me that he only judges a breed every two years, which I think, is a wise decision. We have I am afraid had repeat judges within a year making it difficult for some exhibitors to justify the travel and entry. Best of breed was Mc Ardell’s Tumbril Tantrums and Tiaras at Phendelle. Best Dog was Bellabakes Marczipan Star. Reserve Best Dog & BP was Towers Enjanicka Midnight Blue Res Best Bitch went to Goldens Kayo V H Balgzand (Imp NLD). A long trip for some but am sure it was a pleasant day in the beautiful surroundings.

The recent availability of a test for PRA-prcd a degenerative eye condition has now come to the UK. If you need any dogs testing Animal Genetics a USA company now has a base in Cornwall and does a quick turnaround of 5-10 days for results. This test is only required on breeding stock. There has been considerable hyp regarding the condition on social media and I would advise that you research through more reliable channels. The Kennel Club explains hereditary disease well on this page https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/health/for-breeders/dna-testing-simple-inherited-disorders/ In addition The British Bolognese website has all the up-to-date information required for anybody considering breeding Bolognese. http://britishbologneseclub.co.uk/bolognese/#health

Please send me any news for me to include.
