The winner of the Eukanuba Pup Of The Year 2017 Final was Julie Guvercin’s Ch Baillieswells Glengyle at Glebeheath (Ch Brumberhill Benchmarked JW ShCM ex Baillieswells Stronachie), bred by Professor A Milton. A wonderful result for both owner and breeder and many congratulations to them. This is the first Border Terrier to win this event although Julie Guvercin has won the event a few years ago with a Chinese Crested.

The winner of the Crufts Friend For Life final was also a Border Terrier, Sir Jack Spratticus (Jack) with his owner Vanessa Holbrow. Jack was rehomed by Border Terrier Welfare in 2012 and Vanessa and Jack have nominated BTW as their charity to receive the £5,000 prize money.

I would like to wish everyone a happy and successful 2018.

What an extraordinary year 2017 has been for Border Terriers. At the start of the year
we were still being told that Borders were a healthy breed and that hereditary problems were none existent. Eventually it was admitted that there were two problems which needed research – CECS and SPS, many people in the breed had never experienced either condition and found it hard to believe that the breed which they had always believed to be very healthy could possibly have inherited health problems. However, by the beginning of October a DNA test for SPS became available from the AHT, developed in collaboration with Missouri, USA, who can also supply test kits. All owners of stud dogs should have their dogs tested and should be advising the owners of bitches to have the test as well. If every owner who breeds a litter of Border Terriers will have their bitch tested before mating there need never be another litter bred which is affected by this condition. There is also news that there is to be an in-depth study into CECS by the AHT together with Mark Lowrie starting very shortly where we hope some answers can be found for this condition as well.

At Boston Championship Show on Sunday, 7 January 2018, Mark Walshaw was awarding CCs in Border Terriers for the first time and from 98 dogs, making an entry of 125, he awarded the DCC, his 41st, and BOB to Hall & Ellis’ homebred Ch/GerCh Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW (Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter ex Beaconpike Night Sky at Brackenfell) and he was TG4 (judge – Mr A Small). The BCC, her 5th, went to James & Render’s Ch Chorbeck Gossip Girl at Blackmine JW (Chorbeck Charlie Chaplin JW ShCM ex Chorbeck Heart Breaker), bred by Mrs Haughton. The RDCC went to Mrs J Green’s homebred Breckgreen Soldier Blue (Stowthorney Swinging Sam ShCM ex Breckgreen Blue Christmas) and the RBCC went to Mr M Lowry’s homebred Ravensiide Calima (Ch Brumberhill Benchmarked JW ShCM ex Ravenside Rhyme Or Reason). BP was Mr & Mrs Pickering’s homebred Picer Beth Chatto (Ch Badgerholme Epsom Jet JW ShCM ex Picer Aimee Vilbert JW) and this is her 2nd BP award.

In the Stakes Classes Miss Adams’ Fisherbloom Kiss My Class was 3rd in Special Beginners (judge – Mrs Raye Parry) and 3rd in Member Stakes (judge – Mr Joe Smith); Miss K Johnson’s Karison Krumble was 3rd in Good Citizens (judge – Mr Joe Smith); and Mrs Sansom’s Ch Tarkaswell Double Agent JW ShCM was 4th in Open Stakes (judge – Jacqui Ward).

AT LKA Championship Show on Sunday, 10 December 2017, Mrs Angela M Gregory (Manx) was judging Border Terriers. There were 123 dogs, making an entry of 135 but the entry was much depleted (presumably due to the weather) and 40 borders were actually present (21 dogs and 19 bitches), an absentee rate of approximately 65%. The DCC and BOB went to Mrs Pile’s Tarkaswell Dr Zhivago at Moleschamber ShCM (Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter ex Tufterslodge Tiz Only Me at Tarkaswell), bred by Mrs Sansom and this is first CC. The BCC went to Brannan & Kelly’s homebred Brankell Double Or Quits JW (Glebeheath Name That Tune ex Ch Cedarhill Rising Star at Brankell JW) and this is her third and qualifying CC (subject to KC confirmation). The RDCC went to Mrs Fleming’s Cedarhill Ghost Writer JW (Ch Cedarhill Authorized JW ShCM ex Ch Cedarhill Wish Upon A Star JW), bred by Mrs C Dean, and the RBCC went to Miss De Boorder’s Mulberry Blossom for Boordersway (Ch Badgerbeck Uncle Fester ex Borterra Bonny Lass) bred by Mrs S Jenkins. BP was Mr Pollit’s Brackenfell Rock The Boat for Vandamere (Shiftyfox Tried And Tested ex Brackenfell Tainted Love), bred by Hall & Ellis and this is his first BP award. BV was Mr & Mrs Golding’s homebred Beaconpike In A Storm (Ashbrae Fellman at Beaconpike ex Foxcraig Magic Star at Beaconpike).

IT IS WONDERFUL news that the Kennel Club has approved a new official DNA testing scheme for Spongiform LeucoEncephaloMyelopathy (SLEM) in Border Terriers, following consultation with the breed health coordinator on behalf of the breed clubs. The following statement has been released by Professor Steve Dean, the BHC for Border Terriers:

“PROCEDURE FOR RECORDING SLEM TEST RESULTS AT THE KENNEL CLUB
The Kennel Club sent out a press release announcing the Official Recognition of the SLEM gene test. It was written in a standard format developed for the announcement of new officially recognised tests. I am informed that the AHT is expected soon to send the KC the first tranche of SLEM test results for UK Border Terriers (i.e. those registered with the UK Kennel Club) and this is expected to include all of the tests carried out since the launch of the SLEM test.

Thus, no action by the owners of tested dogs is needed to complete this process, whereas the Press Release suggests something slightly different. You are permitted to send test results to the KC yourself if you wish, but this would very likely duplicate the reporting carried out by the AHT. I would recommend that we allow the internal reporting process between the KC and the AHT to complete its first reporting cycle, and suggest owners check the KC data in a few weeks time to ensure their results have been correctly recorded. I will do my best to alert the breed when the test results start to be published by the KC, but you will realise this relies upon third parties providing me with this information in advance.

During this period, the Breed Health Website will continue to record test results sent, along with permission to publish, to me as Breed Health Coordinator to ensure information on SLEM is available to the breed in a timely manner.

Test results will eventually be transmitted to the KC by the AHT on a monthly basis, and thus for the future there will often be some delay between the test result being sent to the owner and publication on the KC database.” Steve Dean

This action means that eventually all UK registered Border Terriers who have been DNA tested for SLEM/SPS will have their results recorded on KC records. It also means that in future all Border Terrier breeders who are members of the ABS scheme will have to have all their breeding stock tested (although I understand that there is a period of grace in order to sort out their breeding programmes).

The MBTC held an Open Show on Saturday, 4 November 2017, judged by Sandra Girling (Benattivo) and, from 70 dogs making en entry of 85, she awarded BIS and BD to Hughes & Kendrick’s Chatmoss Bullet Tooth Tony (IrCh Crazy Train Pilgrim to Chatmoss JW ShCM ex Chatmoss Working Class Hero MFH JW ShCM), bred by Mr & Mrs Lockley. RBIS and BOS was Miss Moseley’s homebred Abisu Bramble (Ch Rexlands Cock Robin ex Benattivo Abiba for Abisu). RBD was Mrs P Clark’s homebred Gameway McVitie JW (Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter ex Glen Mara Holy Song at Gameway (Imp) ) and RBB was Mr J Parry’s homebred Oakyard On Song (Remony Merry Gentleman ex Glebeheath Maiden Name at Oakyard). BPIS and BDP was Mrs K Irving’s homebred Dandyhow Captain Morgan (Ch Grindelvald In Full Cry JW ex Ch Dandyhow Sonata JW) and BBP was Mrs Medhurst’s Onthill La Rock at Grizzledale (Ch Bandicoot Doc Martin ex Bandicoot Robins Rock for Onthill) bred by Mr & Mrs Ramus. I was extremely impressed with the speed and efficiency of the AHT DNA testing service, I ordered 6 testing kits first thing on Monday, 9 October for the new test for SLEM/SPS in Border Terriers. The kits arrived the next day and I received the results by email exactly 7 days later on Monday 16 October, just 5 working days later. I also needed to telephone them after receiving the kits and the member of staff who spoke to me was very pleasant and helpful. Gold stars all round!

BORDER TERRIERS
13.10.17
It is wonderful news that a DNA test has been developed for SLEM/Shaking Puppy Syndrome in Border Terriers; quite astounding as less than a year ago we were being told that this condition did not exist and those who were trying to gather information about it were told that they were crazy, splitting the breed etc. and that they should keep quiet and not try to bring this out into the open. I only hope that ALL Border Terrier breeders will have their dogs tested, although, of course, we may never know the results. The major difficulty will be bringing this to the attention of those involved with the breed who do not attend shows or have any connection with breed clubs. Stud dog owners have a big responsibility here as many owners of bitches which are not exhibited, prefer to use recognized sires. Also the KC are always willing to help spread the word via email to any BT owner who has bred a litter or transferred ownership and given their email address; but a request for this has to come from the BHC.

It will be interesting to find out how many are clear of this genetic mutation, not least because, although initially a carrier can be mated to a clear (no affecteds will be produced), there is a very real risk of producing many more carriers and if the proportion of carriers is high it will eventually become difficult to find clears to mate to these carriers. There is an excellent article (Breeding Stategies for Managing Genetic Traits) written by Jerold S Bell DVM (Clinical Associate Professor of Genetics at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine) which covers this type of problem. In fact there are several articles by the same author related to the subject which make interesting reading, one of which is (Removing the stigma of genetic disease).

I understand that there has been a lot of rather unpleasant discussion on social media regarding the DNA test because it does not need to be verified by a veterinary surgeon. Please stop this squabbling, be grateful that we now have the ability to test our dogs and hopefully move on into a future where this wonderful breed will eventually be free of this genetic disorder.

Let us hope that further advances will be made regarding CECS, which seems to be more complex; we already have a renowned leading European neurologist (Mark Lowrie) looking into this problem.

At SWKA Mr Mark Ord was awarding CCs in the breed for the first time and from 108 dogs, making 137 entries, he awarded the DCC, his 40th, and BOB to Hall & Ellis’ homebred Ch Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW (Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter ex Beaconpike Night Sky at Brackenfell). The BCC, her 7th, went to Mr & Mrs Gilpin’s homebred Ch Otterbobs Xolana (Ch Rus/Slo/RomCh Stella Rover Akko ex Otterbobs Umber). The RDCC went to Mrs J Guvercin’s Baillieswells Glengyle at Glebeheath JW (Ch Brumberhill Benchmarked JW ShCM ex Baillieswells Stronachie), bred by Professor Milton, and the RBCC went to Brannan & Kelly’s homebred Brankell Double Or Quits (Glebeheath Name That Tune ex Ch Cedarhill Rising Star at Brankell JW). BP was Mr & Mrs Horner’s homebred Stineval Kordia (Emblehope Aperture ex Stineval Katalin).

In the stakes classes Mrs Pile’s Earthtaw Jasper Carrot was 2nd in Minor Puppy and Mr & Mrs Anscombe’s Orangebox Dark Energy was 3rd in YKC Members – both classes judged by Mr Jeff Luscott.

AT DRIFFIELD Championship Show Border Terriers were judged by Mrs Janet Lee (Tythrop) and from 106 dogs (29 absentees) making an entry of 107, she awarded the BCC, her 2nd,. and BOB to Mrs J Roberts’ homebred Smalesmouth Skylark (Ch Brumberhill Benchmarked JW ShCM ex Smalesmouth Maylady). The DCC went to Mr & Miss Goddard’s Kgills King Of Swing at Awbrooksky (Ch/SwCh Sweeping Foxtrot for Kgills ex Springhaugh Time at Kgills), bred by Mrs Bate and this is his 3rd and qualifying CC; a first champion for his owners (subject to KC confirmation). The RBCC went to Mr & Miss Goddard’s homebred youngster Awbrooksky Geeteethree (Sweeping Missionary Man for Kgills ex Mascani Grace) and the RDCC went to Mrs J Green’s homebred Breckgreen Soldier Blue (Stowthorney Swinging Sam ShCM ex Breckgreen Blue Christmas). BP was Mr M Lowry’s homebred minor puppy bitch Ravenside Calima (Ch Brumberhill Benchmarked JW ShCM ex Ravenside Rhyme Or Reason) and this is her first BP award.

There were several successes in the Stakes Classes: Watson & Kenna’s Cynetkoy Pillow Talk won the Yearling Bitch Stakes (judge Mr Stuart Mallard); Miss Adams’ Fisherbloom All Eyez On Me won the Puppy Dog Stakes (judge – Mr Dave Killilea) and was 4th in Special Beginners Dog Stakes (judge – Mr Mike Vickers); Mrs Armstrong’s Carrickfarm Mika was 4th in Veteran Stakes (judge – Mr Stuart Mallard) and Lauren Goddard was 3rd in the YKC Handling 12-16 years (judge – Mr Thomas Sherlock).

The condition of the showground was dreadful by the Saturday (Terriers and Hounds) and, whilst the organizers could do nothing about the weather conditions, it was sensible to have the car parking outside the perimeter. However, the provision of assistance for those exhibitors who needed help getting up or down the ramp and through the mud would have been sensible. Health and safety was given as the reason for moving the car parking and I would have thought that the exhibitors’ health and safety was just as important! Reading some of the comments about how helpful the officials and benching staff were, I began to think that I was at a completely different show! I was offered no assistance at all, other than the young lady helping to direct traffic in the car park who suggested that I squeeze into a space at the end of a row on the hard standing (a big thank you for that!). The ramp was extremely slippery as it was covered in mud and light rain was falling; when I was two-thirds of the way down a tractor driver decided to come up the ramp in the opposite direction, I could not leave the ramp and had to take my small trolley right to the edge so that he could drive up – I have no idea how much space he had at the other side but he passed me with only an inch or two to spare. When leaving the show and struggling to get up the ramp, 3 golf buggies went up and 2 came down, all with no passengers on board. Just where was the assistance for exhibitors? Having all the catering along one side within the showground does not work especially in such wet conditions, by the third day the area in front of the catering stalls was a sea of mud which I was not prepared to risk. Our ring was dreadful near the corner of tent and along the front of the tent due to the water running off the roof; the ring next to ours was in reasonable condition and was unused whilst I was there; it did not look as though it had much use prior to that. The rings in front of the other benching tent appeared to be very muddy and I am surprised by comments that the rings had stood up very well to the conditions (did they move the rings to another area?). A friend had been at the show on day 1 and reported that the rings were in a very poor state on that day.

There is also the problem of the benching (yet again) being a long way from the allotted ring, and it was extremely difficult to find bench and ring numbers, this seems to be a frequent problem nowadays; whatever happened to the boards above the end of the benches stating where each breed is situated? Alternatively, just having the numbers in chronological order (as they used to be) and the corresponding rings at least near the benching for that breed. There is no wonder that entries are falling; if you make it difficult for exhibitors, they will not bother to attend. After all the exhibitors are paying to be there and without them there would be no shows at all. It is an expensive hobby and seems to get more so every year; poor selection of judges with some judging repeatedly just over the 18 months apart, cost of entries and car parking (never mind the fuel) together with a lack of consideration for the exhibitors could well see the demise of dog showing.

THE YL&CBTC held a Championship Show on Saturday, 23 September 2017 at Longridge Civic Hall; judged by Miss Julie Price and, from 123 dogs making an entry of 150 (8 NFC) she awarded the BCC, her 2nd, and BIS to Ms V Docwra’s homebred Bandicoot Dragon Glass (Ch Bandicoot Doc Martin ex Bandicoot Glitter N Gold). The DCC and RBIS winner was Mr Burke’s Ravenside Rumours about Caldewgate (Tythrop Tap On Wood for Ravenside ex Croalchapel Sariska at Ravenside), bred by Mr M Lowry and this is his first CC. The RBCC went to Mr Z Kubik’s homebred Olympia De Paris Fiery Lucifer (Gueville Hywel Ever Blue ex Glen Mara Halfway To Heaven) and the RDCC went to Ms V Docwra’s homebred Ch Bandicoot Doc Martin (Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter ex Ch Bandicoot Jazz JW). BPIS and BDP was Russell & Maynard’s Keebank Jack Frost (Howthwaite Grainsgill ex Keebank Charlie’s Cracker), bred by Mrs Keeffe and RBPIS and BBP went to Mrs Keeff’e s homebred Keebank Snow Queen, Jack Frost’s litter sister. BVIS was Mr & Mrs Barrett’s homebred Ch Howthwaite In Violet (Ch Tythrop Tapas ex Irton Strawberry Fair at Howthwaite).
An interesting item came to light recently when I was looking at changes to Stud Book Bands.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers moved back up to Band E after being on Band D for just 1 year, and there was a quote from the Secretary of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed Council which made it clear that they had been pro-active in trying to increase entries so that the breed could move back to Band E, introducing various initiatives to make shows more attractive for exhibitors and thus increase show entries. She went on to say that moving Stud Book bands seemed like a just reward for all their efforts and only hope other breeds will feel similarly inspired. One of the ways they increased their entries was to allow veterans to enter their shows for free or £1 and also provided special rosettes.
Border Terriers moved from Stud Book Band E down to Band D in 2014 and still remain on that Band. We have considerably higher puppy registrations than SBTs and quite regularly have more entries at general Championship Shows, despite in some cases having a lower number of classes and regularly have the highest entry in the Terrier Group. However, Staffords have 18 breed clubs to Border Terriers 7 and the allocation of CCs for 2018 is the same for General Championship Shows for both breeds but Staffords have 6 extra sets of CCs allocated at breed specialist Championship Shows and will therefore have a higher average of entries compared to Borders which presumably has helped towards regaining their place on Stud Book Band E, due to their Committees’ hard work to attract entries. As far as I am aware there have been no changes made by our breed clubs to try to increase our entries in the way the SBTs have done. Perhaps other breeds may be able to improve their entries in a similar way, rather than just accepting the status quo! A change in the stud book band does not just affect qualifying for a stud book number, it also affects the appointment of judges at general open shows, eg. a breed on Band D where 4 classes are scheduled must have a judge from a B list (although there is a change to this which has been introduced recently, which allows a society to add a puppy class to the 3 classes and still use a judge on a C list – I do not know if this is a temporary, trial change).

Hall & Ellis’ Ch Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW (Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter ex Beaconpike Night Sky at Brackenfell) won the 2nd day Champion Stakes, returning the next day and finishing up 2nd overall (Judge Mr Steve Hall).

On the same day as the Terriers at Leeds I had a wonderful day out in the Lincolnshire Wolds at Benniworth village church fete and fun dog show.
Car parking was around the edge of the churchyard, there were homemade cakes on sale in the church, ploughman’s lunch (delicious!) served at tables in the churchyard. Various stalls were in a most beautiful garden and the dog show was on the lawn in front of the house; off to one side of the lawn an agility course had been set up in the shade of mature trees. Beautiful sheltered surroundings, good weather, lovely people, and dogs were welcome everywhere, even in the church.
Now this was probably not entirely typical of this type of show as far as the surroundings were concerned but the majority of these events are relaxing and fun and are a very good way for people to get experience of dog showing.
If you are interested in showing your dog, this type of show is a good place to start, especially if you choose to go to either a companion dog show or a fun show with a few pedigree classes as you will be able to observe how to exhibit your dog and what the normal procedure involves.
You can decide to attend without prior entering, so if the weather is particularly bad you do not need to go. Quite often you can park at ringside and costs range usually between £1 and £2 per class, so you are not involved in great expense and supporting a charitable cause at the same time.

Refreshments are usually available, ranging from a burger van to delicious homemade fare, again not normally expensive (unlike some KC shows). Above all it can be a fun and enjoyable day out with your dog and you may enjoy it so much that you will want to take up the hobby in a more serious way.
When I first started exhibiting my first show was a local KC Sanction show (no longer available) but I went to many Exemption shows (now replaced by Companion Shows) and because I had Border Terriers I went to many working terrier shows (fun dog shows did not exist then – so many years ago!). I also went to a few Open shows in that first year, moving on to Breed Club shows and Championship Shows when I had a bit more experience and won my first CC just 2 years after that first Sanction Show and made up my first champion the following year.
In other news, my PortCh Kersfell Chorister (Kersfell Masterson ex Annesuz Dawn Run to Kersfell), who is at present owned in partnership with Brigitte Belin-Bernaudin in France, attended his first show in France – Exposition Nationale Chalette on Sunday, 23 July 2017, winning BOB and TG2 (breed judge – Sylvie Dupouy; group judge – Mr Calloch).

AT WINDSOR Championship Show on Saturday, 1 July 2017, the Border Terrier entries topped the Terrier Group. The DCC, also his first, went to Mr D Bean’s Wintergarden Fly’s Finale to Manorcroft (Plushcourt the Bizzness Bee ex Wintergarden Kir Royal), bred by Mr & Mrs Gardner. The RBCC went to Miss A Roslin-Williams’ homebred Ch Mansergh Plusfours (Tufterslodge Walnut at Orangebox ShCM ex Mansergh Speckles JW) and the RDCC and BP went to Mrs J Guvercin’s Baillieswells Glengyle at Glebeheath JW (Ch Brumberhill Benchmarked JW ShCM ex Baillieswells Stronachie), bred by Professor Milton; he went on to take TPG3 (judge – Miss Jenny Dove).

Mrs Sansom’s Ch Tarkaswell Double Agent JW ShCM was 3rd in the Champion Stakes (judge – Mr Peter Young) and in the JHA 12-16 years class Lauren Goddard was 3rd (judge – Miss Sarah Stacey\\r\\n\\r\\nAT EAST of England Championship Show on Sunday, 9 July 2017 our judge was Mrs Marion Reeves (Baywillow) and she awarded the DCC, his 6th, and BOB to Ms Docwra’s homebred Ch Bandicoot Doc Martin (Ch Dandyhow Dr Walter ex Ch Bandicoot Jazz JW). BP was Mrs Clark’s homebred Gameway Love Of The Chase (Ch Grindelvald In Full Cry JW ex Glen Mara Holy Song at Gameway (Imp)) and this is her first BP award. BV was Mrs Baxter’s homebred Int/Am/CanCh Sulan Fancy That (Meadowlake Devil’s Brew ex Sherwood’s Sulan Poppy.

East of England :There were some successes in the stakes classes on Sunday : Hall & Ellis’ Ch Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW won the Champion Stakes (judge – Mr T Ball); Mr & Mrs Gilpin’s Charlie’s Copycat via Otterbobs was 5th in the Postgraduate Stakes and Haydon & Gibbings’ Earthtaw Indiana Jones was 4th in Special Beginners Stakes (both classes judged by Miss P Clayton).

This show used to be very well organized and a pleasure to attend but it seems to have lost its way on several counts, the worst of which is the very strange allocation of benching, with no obvious way of finding one’s bench other than walking up and down the cattle sheds searching for the relevant ring numbers, with no apparent logical order to their distribution. There were also no checks at the exit to make sure that people taking dogs out of the showground had the correct removal passes. I do think that some of the difficulties are nothing to do with the dog show organizers.

There was also an incident involving Border Terriers having an altercation in the car park when one bitch was badly bitten on the hindquarters and was subsequently taken to the veterinary surgeon on duty at the show and I was amazed to hear that this vet had no equipment with them (no means of stitching up wounds or even applying anti-bacterial spray or powder to the wounds); surely these are basic first aid supplies. The owner of the injured bitch ended up with an expensive visit to his own vet and the bitch had to be sedated in order to have six stitches into a tear on her hind leg.
