WEEK 51 ENDING Wednesday 12th December 2017.
Very sad that the last championship show of the year was hit by atrocious weather conditions making it impossible for many exhibitors and judges to get to the venue of the National Exhibition Centre in the West Midlands on Sunday 10th December. Apparently, lots of exhibitors started out on their journey only to turn back when faced with snow and ice making many roads impassable.
From the brave attending exhibitors of the entry, which was diminished by at least half the numbers, Judge: Martin Lockett (Jaideld) chose for BCC & BOB - MOULES Mrs R Doraemi One Vision Sh.CM. DCC - HILL Miss G Ch Crillee Catch Of The Day With Gillaire. RBCC - IWAHASHI, Mr T & KANAYA Ms T Int Ch UK Rockridge Jp I Can't Stop Lovin You. RDCC - IWAHASHI, Mr T & KANAYA Ms T Int Ch Ch Rockridge Jp Highflyer. BPIB - LEE Mrs L Stargus Allegro.
Julie Brown, Secretary of NATA who herself was unable to complete the journey, apologized for the postponement of the Airedale Terrier Health Fund Raffle - The raffle was due to be drawn at LKA. “Unfortunately, despite our attempts to get there early this morning, the weather had other ideas!!!
“The draw has been rescheduled to take place at the Airedale Terrier Training Club of Rushmoor's Christmas Party on Thursday 14th December (I hate to say it, but weather permitting!), in order that the draw can be witnessed. I will advise all winners and post details of the draw itself as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
Also from Julie Brown details and schedule for the 90th Anniversary Year, NATA Championship Show: Next year marks 90 years since the formation of the Association. Our first event of the year will be our Championship Show, to be judged by Mr Paul Wilkinson, which will again be held at Tomlinsons’ Boarding Kennels & Canine Centre, Markfield, Leicestershire LE67 9RJ. Followed by our Annual General Meeting as usual.
The Association is pleased to offer reduced Entry fees, Colour advertising within the Show Catalogue, plus Special prizes and Commemorative gifts available to exhibitors at the Show. In addition to our usual classes, NATA ae once again scheduling Special Award Classes at this Show, to be judged by Mr Manuel Fernandez (Blakfire). For more information please contact Julie on email:

Marion and Roy Gregg and Susan Kealy travelled over from Ireland to the German weekend and Marion says: “Have almost caught up at home after our trip to The World Dog Show. I think I can safely speak for Susan and Roy when I say we had a fantastic 6 days. I spent a lot of the time at The Winners show on Wed. with my Dandie Dinmont friends from Eastern Europe and Russia talking Dandies of course. Terrier club show day was Thursday where we caught up with friends from Australia. Friday was sightseeing around the beautiful city of Leipzig. Friday evening was dinner in a city center hotel--3 from Ireland, 4 from Australia and 2 from Japan and of course we talked dogs. Saturday was spent at the Airedale ring. Judge was Liz Cartledge who obviously enjoyed her day. The quality was excellent. After judging there was an Airedale party in the ring and everyone participated including the judge. Sunday was shopping round the trade stands and of course met up with other Irish folk at the airport waiting for flights. Well worth the travel. “
Isn’t it great that Airedalers from any country are always good to party – it’s in our nature because we own the King of Terriers!
Sadly, during the weekend Tets and Ms Kanaya were infected with “Influenza A”, which is sweeping Europe presently and advise anyone who was in contact with them to get checked out at hospital as soon as possible. Hope you are both feeling better now.
Apparently WESWATC club have been having computer problems which caused their Newsletter not to be received by some members. Mine now received and lots of info contained therein re Airedales in the Wars, Plants which are dangerous to dogs, details of their 2018 Calendar, which can be obtained by texting 07836 502773 state number of calendars required (@ £5 each) and they will let you know the total cost plus postage. Due to increase in the cost of hall hire and decline in number of members attending the monthly trimming meetings, the club are going to have quarterly Trimming days as from 2018. These meetings will be at the same hall from 2pm – 4.30pm on the 3rd Sunday of January, April, July and October. Further info from the club on
Have people making enquiries on my forthcoming litter – why does it worry me when they say “We have just got married and decided that now is the time to get a dog and we have looked at lots of breeds but we like the look of the airedale. We both work full time but have arranged to have some weeks off work to settle the puppy in, we also have mother-in-law around the corner to pop in to puppy whilst we are at work” !!! (and people say I am too cautious).

Now for some very good news: Ruth Boyes reports: “The most amazing news Ruby, the Airedale stolen in June from Sylvia Pickering in Driffield has been found. She was wandering the streets of a West Yorkshire town and a lady took her to Vets4Pets to check her microchip. Just spoken to Sylvia and Ruby is home and reasonably well; she was so pleased to see her old airedale mates, she nearly wagged her tail off! The vet is quite pleased with her. She's had puppies and has mastitis with a bit of a temperature but generally better than we could have hoped. You all know how much I hate fireworks but perhaps it was the loud noises that let her escape; we'll never know, thank God she's safe. Whoever the lady was who found her and took her to the Vet's - A Million Thanks”

We were sorry not to have been there, would have been our Dini’s (Nedella Centrefold Nedella Black Opal x Nedella Cleopatra d.o.b. 20.04.2017) first show and were hoping to meet up with Ann and Ron Sorraghan (Oldiron) from Australia who were en route from Montgomery show in USA to the World Show, for them to see how our dogs with their breeding behind had progressed. Beware if you have a breakdown and call the AA that you don’t get an absolute **** attending your callout. We got a guy from a contractor for the AA attending and got transported home, when all that needed doing was to fix a filter! Ruined the whole weekend for us after not being able to attend any shows since Welsh Kennel Club in August.

Congratulations to all – especially the newcomers: ours is not an easy win – it takes love, determination, time and a great deal of effort to produce an airedale terrier to something like a proper show dog, not least to mention the travelling and cost to get to far flung venues.

Driffield was a very muddy affair according to the reports from our exhibitors, which apparently put quite a few people off from coming but those that went had a good day. Even to a couple of them going on to later take the Good Citizens Bronze Certificate – Well Done Lou Moore with Rannoch and Karen Shaw with Honey.
From the judge Mrs. R Moules: “Many thanks to the exhibitors who braved the diabolical conditions at Driffield, how you managed to get your dogs and a trolley etc. to the benches is a mystery to me. I feel honoured that a good number of dogs had entered the show, but understandably there were some absentees. My major winners are as follows: - DCC and Best of Breed: Miss G Hill’s Ch Crillee Catch Of The Day With Gillaire. Res Dog CC: Mr. D E Ablard’s Katherina's Land Vip Lover. Bitch CC: Mr. T. Iwahashi, & Ms T Kanaya’s Int Ch UK Rockridge Jp I Can't Stop Lovin You. Res Bitch CC Mr. R & Mrs. J. Turner’s Crillee Carry On Maybe Baby and Best Puppy Mr. N & Mrs. H. Toulson’s Toulsyork Nefarious.”
Barrow & District Kennel Association Limit Show - 01/10/17 - Judge: Paige Spencer. RBIS - Miller's LAKEAIRE CARNIVAL IN RIO (D).
Wendy Turner has posted the SATC Newsletter to members and says: “I have been very busy with everything concerning the Monument for the last two months and I have not managed to send out the same amount of Newsletters that I normally do. We have had a crowdfunding site, a giant tombola at the Burns Big Day Out at Glamis Castle and an online Facebook auction which I know many of you have joined in with. The ATCof S have donated everything raised by the raffles and the shop to the Monument Fund.
“To date we have raised £25,000 which means we are halfway there with the Monument Fund.
“The Show members of the club attended the Scottish Newfoundland Charity Companion Show in West Lothian – a Fun Day out with PedidgreeClasses and an Agility Course. With eight Airedales in attendance it comes as no surprise that ATCS Members won many classes and took away the Reserve Best In Show and also the Best Veteran in Show prizes. There were over 60 dogs in competition.
“The Christmas Party will be at Bonnybridge Community Centre Bridge Street, Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire FK4 1AA on 3rd December 2017. Doors open at 12.30 and fun begins at 1.00 pm. Please let us know the ages and names of children who will be attending.”

Driffield Summary of Entries - 38 Dogs 40 Entries.
Odette Stevens sent the following: “The Midland Counties Airedale Terrier Club held its annual BBQ on Sunday 17th September at The Coppins, Bewdley. Around 40 members and their Airedales came along to enjoy the day with us.
“After a (thankfully not too muddy!) walk, we enjoyed delicious burgers, hot dogs and home made soup, followed by a selection of desserts and scones, cream & jam. This year’s quiz was a list of dog breeds in anagram form which certainly tested everyone’s grey matter! The winners were Dave & Hazel Herrin ably assisted by Daisy & Barney.
“BBQ over and it was time for our fancy dress competition, and again this year’s entries did not disappoint! The winners by the very tiniest of margins were Dennis The Menace and Minnie The Minx aka Daisy & Barney Herrin, who having already won the quiz definitely on a winning streak! A very very close second were Annie & Teddy owned by Kim Hatton, as a Strictly Couple with fabulous sparkly outfits! And an honourable third but again it was a very close call – was the wonderful Parsley, owned by Rebecca Ward and Philip Hallam, who was of course a lion!
“Thank you to all our members for their support for the club and our events, and we hope you all had a great day. May I also thank all my fellow committee members for all their help and hard work to make the day such a success.”
In answer to what an aspiring judge needs to do to get to awarding CC’s, Pam Blay gave the following answer: You need to join the KC Academy to where all your CC records will then be transferred. You will then be able to upload all your certificates and put on all your open show experience in other breeds. On each breed you will be given a level e.g. Level 2 through to 5. Every 5 years you will have to retake Rules and Regs. This all really starts in 2019, so you can't download yet!
