Last weekend saw the last Championship Show of the year. Fortunately OES were judged on Saturday, as many people had problems getting to the NEC on Sunday due to the weather. Judge for OES was Sally Duffin and she chose the puppy, Reeevs’ Shaggy Blue Bob’s Xerxes of Brinkley for the Dog CC, with the Reserve CC going to Churcher & Tomes’ Ch Brinkley Viva Las Vegas. Bitch CC (her 3rd) and Best of Breed was Ford’s Ir Ch Brinkley Beautiful Dreamer of Clenmaen and the Reserve to Harris’ Ch Aryakas Stefania at Beauvallon. Best Puppy was the Dog CC winner. Congratulations to all the winners and to the latest Champion in the breed.
Please be careful in this weather, as salt and grit can hurt paws and pads.

The Midland OES Club held their Championship Show on Saturday at the Sports Connexion, near Coventry. Judge Linwood (Woody) Nelson from USA had a good entry of 64. The judges table, as well as the tables for the committee were decorated for Christmas and the usual Christmas music was played before judging started and also in the lunch break. Mince pies and bucks fizz was handed out to all exhibitors, so a nice atmosphere. Dog CC and Best In Show was awarded to Kanalas & Autolitano & Stead’s Wynsilot Wilson for Mat n’ Nik, with the Reserve Dog CC going to the Junior class winner Huggan’s Jandoes Born To Be Wild at Jazziespad. Bitch CC and Reserve Best In Show went to Harris’ Ch Aryakas Stefania at Beauvallon and the Reserve Bitch CC went to the Junior class winner Naismith’s Zottels Honey Moon at Shaggybo. Best Puppy in Show was awarded to Rutland’s Mellowdee Make Me Blush and Best Veteran was Mullen’s Alezurri Glenstorm. It was nice to see exhibitors from abroad as well as many spectators. Next weekend sees the last Championship Show of the year (LKA) where our judge is Sally Duffin.

No shows again this last weekend, so not much to report. The Kennel Gazette arrived in the post this week, with news of the grand opening of Emblehope and Burngrange Estate, which will be a dedicated centre for working dogs. Also in the Gazette was an excellent article concerning the changes to show regulations and new incentives for those who like to attend open shows. There are changes to the Junior Warrant scheme as well as the Show Certificate of Merit, which is to be renamed Show Certificate of Excellence and the Veterans are not forgotten as there will be a special award for wins at open shows. It’s to be hoped that these changes will encourage people to enter open shows as these are the training ground not only for the dogs, but for novice judges.

No shows again this last weekend, so very little in the way of news. The weather is beginning to turn colder so, if there is frost or salt on the roads and pavements, please make sure you wash your dogs paws when you come back from a walk, as the frost and/or salt can make the pads sore.
Entries for Crufts are now available on-line, it seems to come round quicker every year.
Only 2 more Championship shows for our breed before Christmas, The Midland OES Club on 2nd December and LKA the following weekend.

14.11.17
No shows this last weekend, so very little in the way of news. The Breed Record Supplement arrived in the post a few days ago, it was depressing to see that only 80 Old English Sheepdogs were registered, from 11 litters, in the 3 months July to end September. In total only 261 were registered in the first 9 months of the year. We can only hope that a few more will be registered in the final quarter otherwise we might find our breed once again on the at risk list.
However, on a more positive note, those dogs which had been health tested (HD, Elbows, Eyes and PCD) were all good, with 2 dogs having 0/0 hip scores.

Working & Pastoral Breeds of Scotland had a good entry for Alison Sutherland to judge. However, there were a few absentees, resulting in 24 dogs to be assessed. CC Dog and Best of Breed was Sarah Deakins Ch Oldoak Kings Randsom at Darwillow with Reserve CC to Ronnie Burns’ Melleonar’s Crackerjack at Bovaron. CC Bitch and Reserve BOB was Ann Oakes’ Bovaron Charisma at Ambleoak with Pauline Mills’ Kerjalee Mistic Moments being awarded the Reserve CC. Irene & Geoff Duplock’s Shaggy Blue Bob’s Way to Go with Mirene, continued her winning ways, winning her last puppy bitch class before she joins the big girls in Junior, and being awarded Best Puppy in Breed. Congratulations to all the winners. Not many more shows this year, so if you have any news, please let me know.

No news of shows from this weekend, but Heather Gardiner in Scotland was at the Clydebank & District Canine Club Open show last weekend and, with her puppy Digger, won a very good AV Pastoral puppy class and went on to win the Pastoral puppy group. Congratulations. A reminder that fireworks are once again in season. Be careful when walking your dogs, especially early evening. It’s safest to keep them on leads if they are at all nervous of loud noises. It only takes one loud firework to go off nearby for them to take fright leaving you to search from them. On another note, please be aware that this is now the season for Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, a very serious condition which can occur in otherwise healthy dogs, virtually overnight. My own dog was struck down with this just a year ago resulting in 10 days in a specialist vets where he had to have iron injections to bring his blood count back up. It was touch and go whether he would survive. If your dog appears at all off colour or has blood in the stools, take them to your vet immediately. In our case taking our dog straight away ultimately saved his life. Midland Counties show, with judging of OES on Thursday, so hope to have results in next weeks notes. Enjoy the cosy autumn evenings.

The South Eastern OES Club held both a Championship Show and an Open Show at the weekend. The Championship Show in the morning was judged by Ray Owen (Amblegait) and from an entry of 51 he found his dog CC and Best in Show in Ronnie Burn’s Melleonar’s Crackerjack at Bovaron (his magical third CC) with the bitch CC and Reserve Best in Show going to Pauline Mills’ Kerjalee Mistic Moments. Reserve Dog CC was Sarah Deakin’s Ch Oldoak Kings Randsom at Darwillow and Reserve Bitch CC was Dawn Adcock’s Ch Charmlea Delightful at Krisendaw. Best Veteran in Show was Alan Rathband and Joanne Fealy’s Ch Keynell New Moon and Best Puppy in Show was Irene & Geoff Duplock’s Shaggy Blue Bob’s Way To Go with Mirene. Congratulations to all the winners. The Open Show in the afternoon was judged by Colin Laybourne (Dominoesdale) and from an entry of 33 with 10 absentees he found his Best Bitch and Best in Show in Russell & Maureen Jones’ Quemerford Bewitched, Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show was Sarah Deakin’s Ch Oldoak Kings Randsom at Darwillow. Reserve Best Bitch was Ann Lucas’s Dantrecar Sweet Kandi Kiss at Lusadon, Reserve Best Dog was Janet & Tony Steele’s Fr-Int Ch Irresistible Boy of Reality Dream with Arthrug, Best Veteran in Show was Alan Rathband and Joanne Fealy’s Ch Keynell New Moon and Best Puppy in Show was Irene & Geoff Duplock’s Shaggy Bue Bob’s Way To Go with Mirene. Again, congratulations to all the winners. The funeral of the late Alan Pearson will be held on Friday 20th October 2017 at Hollinwood Crematorium, Roman Road, Oldham, OL8.3LU at 1.00pm. Family flowers only please. Donations to Dr. Kershaw's Hospice and The Heart Foundation if you wish. A quick reminder, adverts for the Midland OES Club year book need to be submitted as soon as possible in order that the book is ready for the Club’s Championship Show at the beginning of December. These can be sent to Janet Steele at arthrug@virginmedia.com Thank you.

A good day at South Wales Ch show as far as the weather was concerned. It was cold in the sheds, but at least it was a dry day. Mick Tovey had an entry of 30 (including one NFC) with 25 present for him to assess. He awarded Carol and Brian Evans’ Bracalgem Ray of Sunshine the dog CC from Limit, and Jo Huggan’s Jandoes Born to be Wild at Jazziespad the reserve CC from Junior. Bitch CC and Best of Breed went to Helen and Gareth Harris’ Ch Aryakas Stefania at Beauvallon, and Russell Jones’, Quemerford Bewitched got the reserve CC, again from Junior. Irene and Geoff Duplock’s Shaggy Blue Bob’s Way to go with Mirene was Best Puppy in Breed and went on to win Puppy Group 3, under Stephen Bardwell. Congratulations to all the winners. Dawn Castle was 5th in the Good Citizen stakes with her bitch Molyneux Live the Dream. It’s a shame that we get such poor entries at shows these days, of course a lot of people are put off by the journey to Builth Wells, but the few of us that were there enjoyed a nice friendly atmosphere. Alan Pearson sadly passed away on Saturday 7th October. Along with his wife Maureen, he was a committee member of the North Western OES Club for many years. Sincere condolences to Maureen and his family and friends. No funeral arrangements have been arranged as yet, if I get any details I’ll post in next weeks notes. Please remember the final date for submission of adverts etc for the Midland OES Club year book is 16 October, so send your adverts as soon as possible.

OES were very lucky that we were on the first day at Driffield, although conditions underfoot were not the best, at least it didn’t rain during the day, and we did have sunshine. Later in the day cars were being towed off the car park, and I believe conditions have deteriorated over the last few days. Such a shame for the committee who work so hard to put shows on, but there is little to be done about the weather. Roy Bell had an entry of 23, with 18 present on the day. His Best Bitch and Best of Breed was Bill & Barbara Millward’s Wilbamil Colour My World, Reserve Best Bitch was Cheryl Naismith’s Zottels Honey Moon At Shaggybo. Best Dog and Reserve Best of Breed was Pat Bradley’s Hibray Under My Spell, Reserve Best Dog was A Ferguson’s Mellowdee Moriarty with Lexalby and Best Puppy was Irene & Geoff Duplock’s Shaggy Blue Bob's Way To Go With Mirene. We were invited to the Young Handlers Training Day on Saturday and took our boy Arti for the young handlers to take around the ring. What a lovely afternoon, with all the young handlers showing such enthusiasm for showing. We need to encourage these youngsters as they are the future of showing. The Lancastrian OES Club held their Open show near Preston on Sunday, where judge Carol Spurling found her Best In Show in Carol Evans Bracalgem Ray of Sunshine. Best Bitch & also Best Puppy was Sarah Winson’s Jandoes Cristal Sparkles at Meisan, and Reserve Best Bitch, Irene & Geoff Duplock’s Shaggy Blue Bob’s Way To Go with Mirene.

I have received the following report from Sandie Robertson, who judged OES for the first time on Saturday at Bedford & District Canine Society.
“Thanks to Bedford & District Canine Society who actively support new judges at their show. I enjoyed a super entry of 13 with 8 present to assess.
On the day finidng my BOB from Junior, Cheryl Naismith’s Zottels Honey Moon at Shaggybo, RBOB, Sonja Rutland and Tanya Porter’s Mellowdee Lady Mae and Best Puppy, Sarah Winson’s Jandoes Cristal Sparkles at Meisan.
BOB then went Group 4 and Best Puppy went Puppy Group 1 under judge Janis King.”
Thank you Sandie, for the update. Congratulations to the winners.

Rita Ashcroft’s funeral was held on 25 September, and there were a number of OES exhibitors present for the service held in the village of Croft, near Manchester.
On a brighter note, from posts on social media it would seem we suddenly have several litters of OES puppies from experienced breeders/exhibitors. Hopefully at least some of these puppies will make it to the show ring in the future, as entries are continuing to fall, although at the moment we have several bitch puppies in the ring, but very few dog puppies.

Well done to Darlington committee on the luxury porta loos, lots of comments on social media about them. The layout of the show was good, and the in/out rings with benching right near the ring was great for OES.
The only issue seemed to be the undulating ring surface, which a lot of the dogs didn’t seem to like.

At least the weather stayed dry but it was very cold. There were 37 OES entered, with 31 present for judge Wendy Sculthorp to assess. Dog CC and Best of Breed went to Sonja Rutlands Ch Brwyn's Howdy Doody Loves Hillbilly At Mellowdee, with the Reserve Dog CC going to Pat Bradleys Hibray Under My Spell.
Bitch CC and Reserve Best of Breed went to Bill Millwards Wilbamil Colour My World with the Reserve Bitch CC going to Maureen Leesons Niedersachsen's Pride Joy of Life at Paddiebear. Best Veteran was Colin Laybourne and Alison Johnsons Mellowdee the Magician In Dominoesdale and Best Puppy was Sarah Winson’s Allhart Angelic Roly Poly Of Meisan. Ann Hodgson’s young bitch Obsession Aus Dem Elbe-urstromtal At Ragglebarn was second in the Yearling Stakes class. Congratulations to all the winners.
After the judging Sandie Robertson had organised a Pimm’s picnic with all exhibitors joining in with bringing snacks, cakes etc. It made a lovely atmosphere to round off the day.
Thanks Sandie for your hard work.

I’ve been informed that Rita Ashcroft’s funeral will be held on 25 September, no flowers by request. If anyone wants further details please contact Terri Simmonds or Barrie Croft.

Not a great deal to report this week as Richmond did not have classes for OES. I believe the Sheepie Shindig in Scotland went well, with £500 being raised for the charity concerned.
Darlington Show OES day is Saturday, when exhibitors will have a Pimms party to celebrate the last outdoor show of the year. 40 dog making 37 entries for judge Wendy Sculthorp. Let’s hope we have good weather. Mike Winson and Tony Steele will be on hand with their cameras for anyone who wants a photo for their Midland year book advert.

Pauline & Trevor Mills made the trip to Michelen in Belgium, where their Kerjalee Mistic Moments, won the CAC/CACIB/BOB and Group 2. Congratulations to them.

Sarah Winson’s puppy Jandoes Cristal Sparkles continues her winning ways, winning Best AVNSC Puppy and Puppy Group 2 and Leicester on Bank Holiday Monday and Best Puppy in Breed at City of Birmingham. Only 7 OES at City of Birmingham for Bert Easdon to assess. Best of Breed was Molyneux Live the Dream, with Best Opposite Sex Macopa Moment in Time and Best Puppy Jandoes Cristal Sparkles.
Janet & Tony Steele attended the discussion on the Judges Competency Framework at City of Birmingham, where Jeff Horswell answered question regarding the new scheme. As has been published previously, the pilot scheme will start in 2019, with the scheme beginning in 2021. By January 2022 all judges will need to be a member of the KC academy to be included in the new KC judges list. On a sad note, Rita Ashcroft (Barnolby OES) passed away on 2nd September 2017 aged 83. Rita and her husband Ronnie played a huge impact in Old English Sheepdogs and in 1966 the first Barnolby litter was born. The kennel bred champion after champion and this affix has played an important part in many of the OES blood lines of today. Some of the champions are listed below CH Barnolby Mr Barrymore, CH Barnolby Cinderella, CH Barnolby Wedding Bells, CH Barnolby Troubleshooter At Oldoak, CH Barnolby Sovereign Star Of Bridlepath. Peter Pan sired the great CH Pendlefold Prince Hal who held the breed record of CCs for many years. Barnolby Midwinter sired CH Aberfells Georgy Porgy who himself sired at least 10 Champions, Mr Barrymore sired the famous CH Lomax of Lingar. Rita judged Crufts in 1988 and her last judging appointment was at the North Western in 2005. This is a huge loss to the breed and she will be sadly missed. If anyone would like to advertise in the Midland OES Club Year Book, can you please send photo’s and text to Janet Steele at arthrug@virginmedia.com where you can also send any bits of news for inclusion in these notes.

SKC in Scotland had no CC’s for OES, so just 4 classes for judge Jeanette Richardson. According to Higham Press there were just 4 dogs present, with Best Dog awarded to Audrey Corrigan’s Megabob William Wallace, who went on to win Pastoral Group 2. Best Bitch and Best Puppy was Ann Esposito’s Dalewood Now Your Talking. News from Sarah Winson, her puppy Delilah (Jandoes Cristal Sparkles) won Best AVNSC Pastoral Puppy, Res Best AVNSC and went on to win the Pastoral Puppy Group at West Bromwich & Wednesbury CS. I see also that Lynn Pullen took her puppy to Norfolk & Norwich Open show, where she was Best AVNSC Puppy and Puppy Group 3. Very good results for OES at the weekend. Sunday was Essex Dog Day, where Val & Mel Leggett and Janet & Tony Steele met up with several OES and their owners. Please send any news to Janet at arthrug@virginmedia.com

Lovely news from Jo Huggan and Jeanette Howsam, litter brother and sister, Jandoes Blazin Georgie Girl and Jandoes Born To Be Wild at Jazziespad have recently been hip scored, and both have come back with 0/0 scores. Lovely for breeder Jeanette to get 2 from the same litter with such excellent results.
From an entry of 38, with 34 present at the Welsh Kennel Club. Jeff Luscott chose Ford’s Brinkley Beautiful Dreamer of Clenmaen for the bitch CC and Best of Breed, with Deakin’s Ch Oldoak Kings Randsom at Darwillow being awarded the dog CC and Reserve Best of Breed.
Reserve bitch CC went to Adcock’s newly crowned Charmlea Delightful at Krisendaw and the Reserve dog CC to Turner’s Hibray Unwrapped for Barkston.
Best Puppy was Bell’s Bovaron Easy Rider with Soulbobs and Best Veteran was Laybourne & Johnson’s Mellowdee the Magician in Dominoesdale.
The OES club of Wales held their open show, judged by Julie Moss, at the same venue, with Best in Show going to Adcock’s Charmlea Delightful at Krisendaw and Reserve Best in Show and Best Puppy going to Bell’s Bovaron Easy Rider with Soulbobs.
The following day Tony Steele judged the OES Club of Scotland open show. Best Dog and Best in Show was Corrigan’s, Megabob William Wallace, Reserve Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show was Mckintosh's Amblebay Ace of Hearts of Blairdon. Best Bitch and Best Opposite Sex in Show was Meighan's Jelabobs Lochlands Lassie, Reserve Best Bitch was Brown's Drumlottie Malamatina. Best Puppy was Bell's Bovaron Easy Rider at Soulbobs. Best Veteran was Brown's Hillndale Samuel Whiskers.
The Midland OES Club took part in a ‘mini’ discover dogs at the Pet Show at Stafford showgrounds at the weekend, and I believe the event was well attended, with lots of visitors able to have the opportunity to fuss the dogs and get advice and information about our lovely breed.
Thanks to Heather Gardiner for the following information on the charity fun show she is helping to organise. The Sheepie Shindig Charity fun show is held at Holytown Community Facility, Stevenson St, Holytown. ML1 4RG on 10th September. Show opens at 12pm and runs until 4pm. There are 96 OES puppies, from 15 litters, registered in the latest Breed Record Supplement with a further 1 registered as an import. That is 13 more than in the first quarter of this year, so hopefully this trend will continue. However, it’s a worry that several of the litters are from parents who have had little or no health tests.

Bournemouth judging for OES was on Sunday, with only 4 OES present for judge Ben Ford to assess. Best Dog and Best of Breed was Churcher and Tomes’ Ch Brinkley Viva Las Vegas, with Reserve Best Dog and Best Puppy, Reeve’s Shaggy Blue Bob’s Xerxes at Brinkley. Best Bitch and Reserve Best of Breed was Naismith’s Zottels Honeymoon at Shaggybo. Well done to all. Sunday was also the day for the OES Get Together and Picnic in the Park held at Kingsbury Water Park near Birmingham.
This is organised by myself and my husband Tony, together with Val Leggett and her daughter Mel. This is the 4th year we have organised the event and it has grown year on year, with this year having over 45 dogs (plus a few other breeds which were ‘honorary’ OES for the day) with their owners and families.
The weather was good and it was a lovely day for everyone to get together and chat about our lovely breed. A raffle was held which raised £84 for the OES Rescue Fund, and the combined picnic was enjoyed by everyone. Please send news for these notes to – Janet Steele – arthrug@virginmedia.com

We wish her a speedy recovery

The Open Show in the afternoon was judged by Tanya Porter (Mellowdee).
Best Dog and Best in Show was Audrey Corrigan’s Megabob William Wallace.

Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show was Dawn Adcock & Terri Reed’s Charmlea Delightful at Krisendaw and Reserve Best Bitch was Ann Lucas’ Dantrecar Sweet Kandi Kiss at Lusadon.
Best Puppy was again Kim Reeves new import and Best Veteran was again Mel & Val Legget’s boy. There was a lovely atmosphere at the shows with lots of cake for everyone to enjoy.
Sonja Rutland had cake and drinks to celebrate her dog Mario’s recent Ch title, Dawn Adcock had cake and drinks to celebrate her bitch Ava’s recent title and finally we had cake and drinks from Terri Simmonds to celebrate her mum Teresa’s 80th birthday.
Thanks to the hard working committee for the shows, it’s not an easy task to please everyone. Monday was the turn of Paignton Show down in Exeter, unfortunately OES don’t have CC’s so only an entry of 6 for judge Mrs K Kingsley. Best Dog and Reserve Best of Breed was Jenny Hicks, Zottels Zimply Zuper of Lanxon, Reserve Best Dog was Janet & Tony Steele’s F-Int Ch Irresistible Boy of Reality Dream with Arthrug. Best Bitch and Best of Breed was Russell & Maureen Jones’ Quemerford Bewitched and Reserve Best Bitch and Best Puppy was Ann Esposito’s Dalewood Now Your Talking.
The weather was dreadful, but at least the ring was under cover.

The North Western OES Club held their Open Show on 29 July, judge was Miss Jenna Higgins (Ladamis). From the entry of 19 Jenna chose Ann & David Oakes Bovaron Charisma at Ambleoak for Best Bitch and Best in Show. Reserve Best Bitch was Jeanette & David Howsam’s Jandoes Blazing Georgie Girl. Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show was Carol & Brian Evans’ Bracalgem Ray of Sunshine. Reserve Best Dog was Alan Rathband & Joanna Fealy’s Keynell Midnight Moon. Best Puppy in Show was Irene & Geoff Duplock’s Shaggy Blue Bob’s Way to go with Mirene. Best Veteran in Show was Alan Rathband & Joanna Fealy’s Ch Keynell New Moon. Congratulations to all the winners.
There was a nice atmosphere at the show, with several puppies entered NFC. So lovely to see the puppies getting used to the surroundings of a show. After the judging several of the exhibitors went to the local pub for lunch on the terrace, where the dogs were all very much admired.
August 6th sees the OES (Parent) Club shows, Ch show in the morning judged by Christina Bailey and Open show in the afternoon judged by Tanya Porter, and Paignton show on the following day. Unfortunately no CC’s at Paignton and only 6 OES entered.
There will be an OES Get Together and Picnic in the Park on Sunday 13th August, at Kingsbury Water Park near Birmingham, there is no charge for the event but it’s £4.50 parking. Please email me for further details.
If anyone has any interesting snippets of information on OES please email me so they can be included in these notes. Janet Steele – arthrug@virginmedia.com
