Latest Updates To The Kennel Club Assured Breeder Scheme
The Kennel Club has announced the most recent updates to the Breed-Specific Health Testing and Screening Schedule for its Assured Breeder Scheme (ABS), aimed to further improve dog health and promote responsible breeding. There are changes to the requirements and recommendations for the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

The Assured Breeder Scheme is the only scheme in the UK to monitor and inspect dog breeders and the Kennel Club is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service to do this. The range of breed-specific health testing and screening requirements and recommendations under the ABS is regularly reviewed following consultations with breed clubs and breed councils and with agreement and advice from the Kennel Club Dog Health Group, in a collaborative effort to ensure that health and welfare issues are kept at the forefront of what the scheme sets out to achieve: the encouragement of responsible breeding.

Breed specific changes as of 1st August 2017 are:

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
Add requirement for DNA test – Degenerative Encephalopathy(DE) (previously a recommendation)

Congratulations to Sam Rice & Redden (Tollerice Chase) who won his second novice so winning out of the class in obedience at Cheltenham , well done Sam, keep up the good work

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Junior (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st. Mrs & Mr Y & S Titovets & Eremin AT SLO JCH MACDREAMS TRENT FROM CASHEL VALE RL2 (IMP NLD)
Such a neat package in this 15 month old chap. An appealing, ‘what’s next?’ expression, well proportioned head, especially in profile. Slightly smaller in size, moderate in bone, with beautifully balanced angulation presented in a rich red coat. At first glance he looks a shade long in loin but boy does his movement tell a different story, not putting a foot wrong he travelled the ring in a manner I personally don’t see very often - springy, effortless and not overdone. Great profile movement: one of the best of the day.
2nd. Ms G Byrne LOTTIE ARCADIA BYRNE A pretty puppy, just shy of her first birthday and still looking very much a baby. Well proportioned head with the sweetest expression. Good front, was let down by her topline, possibly related to carrying a smidge too much weight - it will be interesting to see how she develops as she matures. BP.

Post Graduate (8 entries, 2 absent)
1st. Ms & Miss D & T Newson TIVALAKE MORE THAN WISHES
Such a feminine girl with an expression that warms the heart, framed by correctly triangular ears of medium size and well set on. Another well balanced individual with a gorgeous outline all round, albeit on the finer side. Lovely to watch her move - unwaveringly holding her topline whilst she covered the ground with ease.
2nd. Mrs & Mr Y & S Titovets AT SLO JCH MACDREAMS TRENT FROM CASHEL VALE RL2 (IMP NLD)
3rd. Miss M L Elkin TOLLELKIN WATER DANCER

Open (6 entries)
Undoubtedly the most difficult class of the day. I consider myself lucky to have been given the chance to go over such quality dogs and bitches.
1st. Mrs RJ Bradley CAMUSMOR KNOCKANDO AT RUDDYDUCK BEG EX RL6-EX, An old man, and showing some signs of this, admittedly, but he still has it! So toller-like, with the best head of the day: wedged, broad, with correctly-sized triangular ears and a kind, gentlemanly expression. The conformation of his front assembly was one of the clinchers today: well laid back shoulders and correct return of upper arm arranged with excellent angulation from the point of shoulder - balanced with the rear. Drawn by his overall outline and size, with a shorter loin than 2 that contributed to the greater picture. Not disappointing on the move: although with the measure of an older gent, his foot placement was spot on, head carried almost level with back and a firm topline held throughout. BOB.
2nd. Miss H Strevens Sh Ch ERIKACHEN CONAIRE AT TOLLISTY JW ShCm Undeniably a showman, and with good reason - he certainly catches the eye. Shown in hard condition, another beautiful head with almond eyes and deep expression, framed by larger ears. More open in front angulation and a shorter upper arm than 1, leading into arrow-straight legs on tight feet - testament to his condition. Strong loin but slightly longer and so not as compact as 1. Impressive on the move, though not quite the profile movement today. A close call. RBOB.
3rd. Mrs & Mr Y & S Titovets & Eremin INT CRO AT RUS CH SLO GCH DELONGSTAR DIAMOND DREAM RL6-EX

Show Critiques:

Paignton & District (No CCs)

Pleased to see the quality of the breed is improving, especially front assemblies with much better returns of upper arm than when I judged previously. I was disappointed to see an exhibit with a bad mouth and hope that breeders will work to ensure that this does not become widespread in the breed.

Puppy Dog (1, 0)
1st: Ede’s Redaurora Follow That Dream. Just 7 months old. Wedge shaped head with pleasing expression. Good bone with strong neck into well laid-back shoulder with good return of upper arm. Currently a little long in back and loin and standing bum high which is not unusual at his age. Promising youngster and fully deserving of his Best Puppy.

Junior Dog (2,0)
1st Wright’s Camusmor Crown Royal. Super 17 month old youngster. Wedge shaped head with good proportions and moderate stop. Excellent angulation front and rear. So well balanced but needs to body up.
2nd: Withheld

Post-Graduate Dog (3, 0)
1st: Woollerton’s Camusmor Chili Pepper At Culmgillie. I really liked this 3 year old boy. He fills the eye with his deep red coat highlighting his typey profile. Not surprised to see he is from the same kennel as my Junior winner as shares his excellent head proportions, angulation and balance. Needs to build up his stamina so he shows as well in the challenge as the class.
2nd: Morgan’s Erikachen O' Ruadh For Deltandamba JW Sh.CM. Eye catching 2 year dog, still maturing. Scored with his lovely effortless movement earning him 2nd in this very close class although I preferred the head proportions and maturity of 1.
3rd: Dee’s Melanitta Carelinus.

Open Dog (6, 0)
1st: Wright’s Erikachen Daithi Of Wrightpaw JW Sh.CM. Maturing nicely this 2 year old, deep red boy is fulfilling the promise he showed when I judged him as youngster. Masculine wedge-shaped head with mischievous expression, strong neck into well laid-back shoulders, well angulated rear. Moves jauntily and with purpose holding his topline both stacked and on the move. Pleased to award him Best Dog and Best of Breed.
2nd: Cox’s Decoymans Piper Dreamtime In Icestorm RL2. Lots to like with this 5 year old boy. He is not as showy as some of the youngsters but an excellent type, you can almost imagine the duck in his mouth. Wedge shaped head with correct moderate stop, well angulated front and rear, pleases in profile and moved out so soundly for Reserve Best Dog. So nice to see a dog showcasing the breed’s versatility with his Rally title.
3rd: Ede’s Mrs D J Redaurora Festive Dasher

Puppy Bitch (1, 1)

Junior Bitch (No entries)

Post Graduate Bitch (6, 0)
1st: Newson’s Tivalake More Than Wishes. Very nice 3 year old bitch. Feminine head with melting expression. Good length of neck into well laid-back shoulders and balanced angulation. Excels in topline which she maintains both on the move and stood, carries her tail just above level but I would like to see it carried higher for a complete picture. Very happy to award her Best Bitch.
2nd: Shore’s Redaurora Golden Dream Beg.Ex RL3. This 4 year old bitch left her coat at home but she didn’t have much to hide, typey profile and moves out soundly although her front angulation is a little shallow. She does need more body but again so nice to see a dog excelling in other canine activities.

3rd: Ward’s Melanitta Healstether

Open Bitch (7, 2)
1st: Ede’s Redaurora Golden Fox Fires. This 9 year old girl is still so fit and outmoved all the youngsters. Feminine wedge-shaped head, strong neck and balanced angulation. A little bum high when stood but drops into her topline on the move, could not be denied Reserve Best Bitch.
2nd: Black’s Seahaven Parish Bell. Very typey 4 year bitch, pleasing head proportions and excellent angulation but disappointed she was carrying too much weight although still moved well enough for this place.
3rd: Palfrey’s Flushpoint Whata Accident For Melanitta (Imp Swe)

Rachel Bradley

NGA (CCs)

Firstly I would like to thank those member clubs of the National Gundog Association who voted for me to judge this show, this being my first appointment in awarding CC’s in this breed. I would also like to thank my efficient steward who kept me on track.

Veteran – Dog: 3

1st Harding & Whitehill’s Sh.Ch.Trevargh The Entertainer At Brizewood, a dog that I have always liked, now competing as a veteran, appealing head and expression, good straight front with tight feet, well laid shoulders, well angulated front and rear, deep chest with well sprung ribs. Level top-line, in good coat, moved with drive and style

2nd Baker’s Erikachen Aonghus smaller than 1, but up to standard, good head and expression, straight front with tight feet, well angulated, in good coat, moved well

3rd Ward’s Flushpoint Whata Aristocrat At Melanitta (IMP SWE) good head and expression, well angulated, correct turn of stifle, in good coat, moved well. I just preferred top-line of 2

Puppy - Dog: 3 - Abs 1

1st Ravetta’s Wakaduze Watawicasta, appealing young man, right size for his age Good straight front, correct turn of stifle, moved well but not with his tail up, but I forgave him

2nd Fielder’s Schindow Junior Cowboy With Crethsenegan Well angulated young man, preferred head of winner, carried his tail well on the move, unfortunately shown in very lean condition.

Junior – Dog: 5

1st Titovets & Eremin’s Macdreams TrentFfrom Cashel Vale RL1 AT/SLO JCH. Typical young man, appealing head and expression, good straight front with tight feet with well arched toes, well angulated front and rear, correct turn of stifle, coat was in excellent condition, simply flowed round the ring, tail carried correctly, I will watch this young man’s future progress with interest.

2nd W. Watawicasta

3rd Wright’s Camusmor Crown Royal, preferred head of 2, moved well with his tail up, I would advise that this dog’s demeanour would be helped by ring craft.

Graduate – Dog: 4

1st Macdreams TrentFfrom Cashel Vale RL1 AT/SLO JCH

2nd Dee’s Melanitta Carelinus, good head and expression, well angulated front and rear, well laid shoulders, moved well carrying his tail correctly, preferred winners overall picture, coat condition and movement.

3rd Burchell & Scott’s Tivalake Make ‘Em Laugh JW, good head and expression, appealing breed type, preferred 2’s lay of shoulder, although this was a close decision between 2 and 3

Post Graduate – Dog: 4

1st Morgan’s Erikachen O'Ruadh For Deltanaba JW ShCM, eye catching dog, appealing head and expression, a darker eye than 2, well angulated front and rear, straight front with good bone and feet, coat was in excellent condition, this dog really covered the ground on the move with his tail up, perhaps coat markings were too flashy for me, but I am sure there are others who will like this more than me, getting top honours will surely be imminent.

2nd Macdreams TrentFfrom Cashel Vale RL1 AT/SLO JCH

3rd Fuard’s Tollekin Bay Of Ice, balanced outline, moderate in proportions, moved well, unlucky to come up against 1 and 2.

Limit Dog: 5

Nothing was overdone. Pleased to award him the CC which I was later told was his third and later to award him BOB.

2nd Woollerton’s Camusmor Chilli Pepper At Culmgillie, balanced outline, well angulated front and rear, although preferred winners front, correct bend of stifle in good coat, moved well.

3rd Moult & Savory’s Acanuck Soul Rebel Of Croftwell balanced dog, good head and expression, preferred angulation and coat condition of 2, moved well.

2nd Fuard’s Tollekin Bay Of Ice, this dog was for me the top end of the standard. Good front and feet, firm top-line, moved well carrying his tail correctly up.

Veteran Bitch: 2, very close decision between these two

1st Palfrey’s Flushpoint Whata Accident For Melanitta (IMP SWE), good head, enough bone and tight feet, good top line, well bent stifles, moved well.

2nd Anstead’s Riverwatcher Ikkuma preferred this bitches feet (l do like nice tight right feet), just preferred winners turn of stifle, firm top-line, straight front, moved well.

Puppy Bitch: 4, I thought to myself how similar the first three were, so no surprise when I later found they were all from the same litter. The breeder must be proud of these three puppies along with the other sibling that won the puppy dog class.

1st Pashley’s Wakaduze Wah Pen Dah Ska lovely feminine head and expression, well angulated front and rear, good straight front with nice tight feet, enough bone, firm top-line which for one so young, she held on the move, correct bend of stifle, coat was in lovely condition, and could she move!! She was everything that I would want, and for me watching her move brought a smile to my face. I rarely give honours such as the Reserve CC to one so young, but this was one of those rare occasions. I shall watch this young ladies future progress with interest.

2nd Taylor’s Wakaduze Wiyaka another very feminine birch, lovely head and expression, good front although just preferred that of winner. well angulated, correct turn of stifle, good top-line moved well.

3rd Hunt’s Wakaduze Zigi very similar in shape and size as 1 & 2 in good coat and moved well, just preferred eye colour of 2 but this improves with age.

2nd Hughes’ Eusanit Cut and Run At Abacot, lovely head and expression, good fore-chest, balanced throughout, well bent stifles, moved well. Unfortunately too much white in the coat for me to award her the first place.

3rd Hunt’s Wakaduze Wakaska JWW15, feminine bitch very balanced, good head and expression, just preferred 2’s head, moved well.

Open Bitch: 5

1st Black’s Seahaven Parish Bell, balanced feminine bitch, appealing head and expression, lovely balanced outline, straight front with good bone and tight feet, well angulated front and rear, strong firm top-line, in good coat, moved well with her tail carried correctly up. pleased to award her the CC.

WKC (CCs)

My first time giving CCs & I thank the exhibitors for a lovely entry with plenty of good dogs for me to choose from. It seems like only yesterday that I judged the club open show but it was back in 2014, so I was surprised to see that I gave BOB to the same dog who won best dog under me then. Just goes to show what stayers this breed is.

VD (3) 1 Harding & Whitehill’s Sh Ch Trevargh The Entertainer at Brizewood, mature dog who belies his age, he is in excellent coat & condition, lovely masculine head & expression, well made & moved so soundly looking particularly good in profile with his correct head carriage, he is very masculine in outlook with & good neck & shoulders, strong topline & well set tail. At the end of the dogs, I could see nothing to lower his flag & I was pleased to award him the RCC & BV and he went on to 3rd in the Veteran Group.

2 Powley’s Danehave Severn, older male who moved so well holding his topline & well carried tail, has a masculine head & expression with good expressive ears, he is of a good size & proportions with a lovely coat which was beautifully presented, good hindquarters, well boned legs & feet.

3 Ward’s Melanitta Fireblade.

PD (1) 1 Ede’s Redaurora Follow That Dream, lovely puppy just right for age, he has lots of potential, in good puppy coat with a good head which is maturing nicely, moved just as a puppy should, he is loose at present but he is well made with the correct length of neck, lovely bone & feet, good depth of chest for age, good proportions. BPD.

JD (3) 1 Collins & Powley’s Danehaven Kovik, good body proportions with enough coat to cover at present but what he has is well conditioned & correct texture, lovely head & expression, good topline & tailset, lovely hindquarters, this workmanlike dog has a very masculine outlook & looked impressive in profile on the move with his correct head carriage.

2 Titovets & Eremin’s Macdreams Trent from Cashel Vale, darker boy who still needs to finish to complete the picture, another with his summer coat on, he moves well & is balanced with a good forechest & strong topline, good head but eyes just need to darker still to complete the picture but he has good ear carriage & the correct neck & well laid shoulders

3 Wilson’s Stacearella Nimbus

PGD (5,1a) 1 Burchell & Scott’s Tivaslake Make ‘Em Laugh, mature, good moving male in excellent coat & condition, good body proportions, lovely neck & shoulders, correct front construction, masculine head & expression, moved so soundly with verve really covering the ground with ease, good depth of chest & well boned legs & feet, good topline & tailset, very masculine in outlook which took the class.

2 M Trent from Cashel Vale;

3 Morgan’s Erkachen O’Ruadh for Deltadamba.

LD (6) 1 Wakely’s Riverwatcher Kaviksuk, mature dog who fills the eye, excellent head & expression, he is balanced with enough coat which was in lovely condition, god neck & shoulders, strong topline & tailset, would just prefer a stronger hindquarter & a better bend of stifle but this doesn’t hold him back as he effortlessly covers the ground & moves soundly up & back. Won the class on his type, quality & showmanship;

2. Strevens’ Erikachen Conaire at Tollisty, nice male who moved well really using his forequarters to advantage, excellent head & expression, good neck & shoulders, strong topline, well boned legs & feet, this was a strong class & he showed well to win his place for he was balanced with excellent body proportions;

3 Moult & Savory’s Acanuck Soul Rebel of Croftwell.

OD (9) 1 Anstead’s Multi Ch Riverwatcher Atka, loved the balance & masculity of this dog, in excellent coat & condition, masculine head & expression with the correct eye shape & colour, well set & carried ears, lovely neck & shoulders, strong topline & well set tail, well boned legs & feet, I can add nothing to what I said when I gave him best dog at the club show except to say he has matured into a quality Toller of an excellent type. Pleased to give my first CC to this excellent dog. CC & BOB;

2 Wakely’s Riverwatcher Nukilik, litter brother & he also won a class at the same show! Again that lovely masculine outlook, he again is quality & a lovely type, masculine head & expression, correct neck shoulders & topline, moved well on well boned legs & feet, well set & carried tail, looked particularly good in profile movement keeping his head at the correct level for the breed, again put down in excellent coat & condition;

3 Burchell’s Tivalake Jingle Bell Rock.

VB (2) 1 Palfrey’s Flushpoint Whata Accident for Melanitta, lovely old girl not really showing her age, such a pretty head & expression, she is balanced & a good size, lacking coat at present but what she has is very well put down, lovely neck & shoulders, good forequarters, a credit to her owner for she moved well too.

2 Anstead’s Riverwatcher Ikkuma, another I have judged before & pleased to see her again, again that pretty head & expression, there is no mistaking her sex, good neck & forequarters, well boned legs & feet, within the Standard for size, enough coat for the day & she seemed to be enjoying her day.

PB (3) 1 Yates’ Melanitta Milk And Honey, mature puppy bitch with enough coat of the correct texture for age, pretty head & expression with well set & carried ears, good topline & tailset, this showgirl is balanced & well made with a lovely hindquarters, enough bone & good feet, just now needs to drop into her frame, moved well for a puppy trying so hard to get it right for her handler, this quality girl showed her socks off to take two classes & BP;.

2 Taylor’s Wakaduze Wiyaka, smaller bitch who showed well, held her topline both set up & moving, feminine outlook, still a baby & needs to finish to get her balance & fill out, in lovely coat & condition with well boned legs & feet, still loose in front in up & down movement but that will tighten with age.

3 Hut’s Wakaduze Zigi.

JB (3) Repeat.

PGB (3,1) 1 Powley’s Danehaven Fenelon, well bodied, mature bitch who moved so well, she is very feminine & a lovely type, in good coat & condition, strong topline & well set & carried tail, pretty head & expression, lovely neck & shoulders, good depth of chest with a good loin, enough hindquarters, showed well both here & in the challenge to win the RCC.

2 Wardrope’s Dizzy Miss Lizzy, smaller bitch who is still young & needs to finish, pretty head & expression with a good eye & well set & carried ears, good neck & shoulders, in lovely coat put down so well, would just like her a size bigger for perfection but she moved well on good feet.

LB (10,2) 1 Wow what a class to judge. Thank you. 1 Macleod & Macleod’s Camusmor Lika Star, best mover in the class, just so typical of the breed, excellent head & expression, lovely eye of the correct size & shape, well set & carried ears, excellent neck & shoulders, strong topline held both set up & moving, balance & in good coat & condition, excellent hindquarters, well boned legs & feet, well set & carried tail, she is so very feminine & quality. Could not deny her the class & CC in strong competition.

2 Hughes’ Eusanit Cut And Run, another typical bitch with a pretty head & expression, moved well on well boned legs & feet & being of the correct proportions she effortlessly moved in profile with correct footfall, good hindquarters & well set tail, good neck & clean shoulders, showed & moved well to win her place, in good coat & condition;

3 Newson Newson’s Tivalake More Than Wishes.

OB (5,1) 1 Morgan’s Redaurora Comet’s Christmas of Deltandamba, of a good size & outline, moved well in profile but back & forth she was loose in front, she is balanced with a lovely head & expression, good ears well set & carried, good neck & shoulders, good topline & tailset, good depth of chest, in lovely coat, showed well to win here.

2 F Whata Accident for M.

3 Anstead’s Sh Ch Riverwatcher Pikpaktuk.

Latest news from the AHT on the Give a Dog a Genome project, they have already selected a healthy, older Toller to be whole genome sequenced as part of Give a Dog a Genome (GDG). A DNA sample from a suitable dog has now been sent to a commercial laboratory for sequencing.

The sequencing is expected to take up to 8 weeks to complete, after which the data will be made available for them to download, process and analyse. The volume of data generated for each individual sample is extremely large and takes 3-4 days to download and process. The data will then be used as control data in in current and future investigations of genetic disease in various dog breeds.

While the club will continue to receive any general GDG updates, we will probably not receive any further GDG communications specific to the Breed. I would like to thank the breed community for participating in Give a Dog a Genome (GDG). Great news on the health front, I will update once any information becomes available.
